NSW: Motorists urged to travel safely following deaths

SYDNEY, April 26 AAP - The NSW road toll so far for the Anzac long weekend is down
on last year but motorists are still being urged to slow down following two deaths in
separate accidents.

The warning comes as police continue their Anzac Day weekend road safety campaign,
Operation Go Slow, targeting speeding motorists, drink drivers and people not wearing
seatbelts.

Traffic Services commander John Hartley urged motorists to take care tonight as they
drive home from short breaks over the three day weekend.

"So far this long weekend, two people have died on our roads compared to seven last
year, so whilst it's two too many it's still better than seven last year," Chief Superintendent
Hartley told reporters.

"Take your time, do the right thing, make sure you take a break every two hours."

An 18-year-old woman sitting in the back seat of a car was killed on Saturday when
the car spun out of control on a bend and slammed into a pole in Camden.

Earlier, a mother was killed and her two-year-old daughter injured in a head-on collision
near Newcastle.

Nearly 70,000 motorists have been randomly breath tested during the campaign with 304
people being charged, he said.

This was 147 people less than this time last year.

Police today arrested a 31-year-old man and 33-year-old woman in Smithfield wanted
in relation to carjacking and armed robbery offences after they were pulled over for breath
testing, he said.

Operation Go Slow will continue until 11.59 (AEST) tonight.
